The delicate balance speaks extremely well of the show's creators, who know exactly what they want and thread a number of narrative needles to get there. The TV-PG rating comes almost as a necessity in exchange. Livewire's antics essentially amount to terrorism, particularly with the bombs planted beneath Metropolis. Aspects of Clark's origins story carry a darker edge too: not only with a few brief images of Krypton's apocalypse but Jor-El himself who appears as a positively fearsome hologram.

The most ominous scene arrives as a coda, as Livewire wakes up in the custody of Amanda Waller and Deathstroke. She finds herself strapped to a table and tortured by a shock collar for information. It's reasonably mild -- the Diniverse often did worse -- but it's intense and obviously painful for Leslie.

That's enough to lend it a little rider to warn away the very young. My Adventures with Superman clearly has all ages in mind, which may come as a relief to parents eager to steer young children away from the Snyderverse and its ilk. The rating comes as a little reminder that for all its joys, this version of the DC universe still has a scary side. It's a spot-on assessment.
