1. Investigate the audience
- This step is very important, it will decide if your speech is successful or not
- Ask yourself these questions: Who are the listeners, what do they wanna know?
- You also have to pay attention to the number of the listeners, their feeling at that moment too.
2. Choose a topic and narrow it down
- You should choose the topic that is most suitable to the majority of the listeners. Wise choice must be done after thinking carefully about jobs, ages, social class, interest of the audience.
- Why we have to narrow down the topic simply because we don't have all day to talk, even we do, but nobody will be patient enough to stay focus on your ongoing speech
3. Outline your ideas
- Brainstorming will help you to get the ideas about the topic
- Select the ideas, cross out the unnecessary and repeating ones, then group them into main ideas
- It's gonna be confusing if you don't have an outline of your speech. It will waste much time when you try to over explain one point again. Moreover, you can't realize the lacking ideas or missing details
4. Collect information and supporting details
- You've got the main ideas in your outline and you have to prove that true with enough explanations and details
- Find the information in books, newspapers, internet or whatever. Remember to mention the source when you quote something.
- Use properly selective words and grammar to make sentences while you explain an idea. Why? Different listeners prefer different speeches. The professor can comprehend information much better than student; the aged is interested in history much more than the kid.
5. Rehearse
- This step helps you to control the time1 when you deliver speech and memorize the content of the speech2.
- You will also find out some lacking or redundant information3. So that you will decide to add in or cut off in order to edit your speech last time4
- The more you rehearse, the more fluently you can speak. Of course, the listeners prefer to listen to the smooth speaker. They will judge you're well- prepared and professional.
- Rehearse with a friend or merely talk to yourself in the mirror in the bathroom. If you don't prepare anything then prepare to fail
6. Collect the feedback
- Find your fans or supporters in the audience. They are your big encouragement
- Read their eyes if they show you anything: interest, boredom, tiredness, doubt or irony. (So that you can adjust your speed of speech, tongue, intonation, way to use words)
- Ask some of the audience during or at the end of the speech to see if they catch up with your talk
