Lò thị Tiếp and her family have always lived a hard life in their form in the Điện Biên Province of Vietnam. With just a tiny plot of land that was hardly irrigated because water was scarce, they earned less than $40 a month planting rice. But in 2012, things changed for the better when Tiếp joined a women's group that raised pigs in their commune.

A project supported by the World Bank provided each woman in Tiếp’s group with two small pigs, feed, and training on sanitation, feeding, and disease prevention. In just a year after she started out with two piglets, Tiếp now has five pigs. She can earn as much as six hundred dollars selling her pigs in five months. This is three times higher than her household income before she joined the group.

Tiếp’s group meets monthly to visit piggeries (trại / chuồng lợn) and share experiences in raising their pigs. They also help one another in ensuring that they don't sell their products below the prevailing market price.

Tiếp is only one out of six thousand agricultural groups in Vietnam supported by the second northern mountains poverty reduction project. More than fifty thousand poor households are expected to benefit from the project. Tiếp hopes to have 10 pigs next year so she can save enough money to build a new house.
