IELTS Speaking: Idioms cho chủ đề Relationship

Một bài nói có thêm idioms sẽ nghe tự nhiên và giống với người bản xứ, nhưng nếu câu nào cũng có idiom thì thứ nhất bài nói sẽ bị trừ điểm, thứ hai giám khảo chấm thi sẽ nghĩ rằng các bạn đang khoa trương vốn từ của mình. Hãy dùng từ vựng và idiom một cách thông minh nhé!

A/ Mối quan hệ tốt

• 1/ get on like a house on fire

Mối quan hệ cực kỳ thân thiết.

Ví dụ: As soon as we met each other, we got on like a house on fire and just took an instant liking to each other.

• 2/ have a soft spot for

Thích một ai đó. Chúng ta thường dùng idiom này để nói về việc mình thấy một ai đó và điều đó có thể gây một ít ngạc nhiên tới người nghe

Ví dụ: I always had a soft spot for Maria despite the fact that she often let me down. [to let someone down: làm cho ai đó buồn, thất vọng]

• 3/ get along with

Có mối quan hệ tốt đẹp với ai đó.

Ví dụ: I suppose I always got along quite well with my sister when we were growing up.

• 4/ look up to

Kính trọng ai đó, thường được dùng đối với những người lớn tuổi hơn.

Ví dụ: When I was a child, I always looked up to my father. He was a real role model for me.

• 5/ speak the same language

Nếu các em “speak the same language as someone”, các em và người đó đó có cùng chung suy nghĩ, ý kiến

Ví dụ: I think one reason we get on so well is that we really speak the same language as each other. There’s almost nothing we disagree about.

• 6/ be on the same wavelength

Idiom này có cùng nghĩa với “speak the same language”

Ví dụ: We’re almost exactly on the same wavelength as each other and agree about almost everything.

B/ Mối quan hệ xấu

• 1/ fall out

Bất đồng ý kiến một cách nghiêm trọng. Lưu ý: fall out with someone + over/about something. Cụm danh từ của fall out là have a falling out.

Ví dụ: We used to get on pretty well but then we fell out with each other when we went to university.

• 2/ a rocky relationship

Mối quan hệ lận đận, lúc vui, lúc ghét.

Ví dụ: It was quite a rocky relationship as we used to argue with each other all the time and we sometimes went days without speaking to each other.

• 3/ can’t stand

Nếu em “can’t stand someone”, có nghĩa là em ghét người đó

Ví dụ: I couldn’t stand my brother when we were younger. I guess it was an extreme case of sibling rivalry.

• 4/ turn sour

Khi một mối quan hệ “turn sour”, nó trở nên tồi tệ

Ví dụ: I think our relationship turned sour when she refused to help me.

• 5/ get off on the wrong foot with

Lúc đầu (kh mới quen), mối quan hệ khá tệ

Ví dụ: Although we are now good friends, our relationship got off on the wrong foot and initially we couldn’t stand each other.

• 6/ get on someone’s nerves

Nếu một ai đó “get on your nerves”, nghĩa là họ làm phiền mình rất nhiều.

Ví dụ: Despite the fact that she is a nice person and has many good qualities, she still gets on my nerves and I find it hard to like her.

• 7/ let someone down

Nếu một ai đó “lets you down”, nghĩa là họ làm chúng ta thất vọng bằng cách nào đó.

Ví dụ: I do like her, but there was one occasion when she let me down quite badly.

• 8/ look down on

Xem thường người khác

Ví dụ: One thing I don’t like about him is that he looks down on people who are less intelligent than him.

C/ Mối quan hệ tương đối.

• 1/ move in the same circles

Giao tiếp như bạn bè bình thường với những người có cùng đặc điểm, sở thích.

Ví dụ: Although we are not particularly good friends, we see each other quite a lot as we move in the same circles.

• 2/ be on nodding terms

Dùng thành ngữ này để thể hiện sự thân thiết với những người quen mà các em chỉ biết sơ sơ về họ

Ví dụ: While we are on nodding terms and say hello to each other every day, I wouldn’t call him a friend.

• 3/ know someone inside out

Biết rất rõ về một ai đó

Ví dụ: I guess you could say I know him inside out by now – all his good points and all his bad points.

• 4/ keep in touch with

Giữ liên lạc

Ví dụ: Sadly, we didn’t stay in touch with each other after we left school and I don’t know what he’s doing now.

• 5/ see eye to eye with someone

Đồng ý với nhau về vấn đề gì đó

Ví dụ: We see eye to eye about most things but we can never agree about what film to watch.

• 6/ keep yourself to yourself

Dùng để nói về một người nào đó mà họ ít giao tiếp với người khác.

Ví dụ: He wasn’t very outgoing and sociable and preferred to keep himself to himself. For all that, he was perfectly friendly.

• 7/ wear the trousers

Người quyết định trong một mối quan hệ

Ví dụ: Although David earns more money, it is Sylvia who really wears the trousers in the relationship. David will also do what she says,

• 8/ a fair-weather friend

“A fair-weather friend” dùng để chỉ một người mà họ chỉ làm bạn với mình khi mọi thứ thuận lợi và họ có thể sẽ làm mình thất vọng khi mọi thứ khó khăn.

Ví dụ: She was something of a fair-weather friend though and I couldn’t rely on her for help when times were bad.

D/ Mối quan hệ lãng mạn

• 1/ go out with

Có mối quan hệ lãng mạn với…

Ví dụ: They’ve been going out with each other for around two years now.

• 2/ be an item

Có mối quan hệ tình cảm với ai đó (thường được dùng trong những mối quan hệ đã dài lâu)

Ví dụ: They were an item for quite some time before they got married

• 3/ get together

Bắt đầu một mối quan hệ

Ví dụ: We first got together when we were in high school

• 4/ tie the knot

Cưới ai đó

Ví dụ: They’d been living together for a few years before they decided to tie the knot.
